Description
Seeking a Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse for a full time position at Rural Health Group's Family and Women's Health medical clinic located in Roanoke Rapids, NC.  General hours are Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Please Note: Only applicants who have experience or training with medical office operations and OB/GYN healthcare will be considered.

OB-GYN Clinical Assistant
 
General Medical
An OB-GYN clinical assistant performs several general medical duties. These include weighing patients, taking a patient's blood pressure and temperature and collecting urine samples. The clinical might also collect blood for routine follow-up or preoperative testing. When an OB-GYN performs certain in-office medical procedures, the clinical assistant prepares any necessary medical equipment and preps the patient. After each appointment, the clinical assistant cleans up the room, sterilizes medical equipment and organizes the room for the next patient. When working with patients, the clinical assistant must have good oral and written communication skills to relay medical information and instructions.

Obstetrics
The clinical assistant will be responsible for assisting the doctor with providing prenatal care to patients in the form of providing educational resources and answering any questions the patient has about the pregnancy process. Assist with maintaining detailed medical records for each patient. The clinical assistant is also responsible for entering patient data into the electronic health record.

Gynecological
Along with performing obstetrician duties, an OB-GYN clinical assistant also helps the provider with set-up of gynecological duties such as pelvic exams, pap smears and breast exams, inter-uterine birth control devices, colposcopies, biopsies.  At the direction of the provider, the clinical assistant provides information on family planning, birth control education material etc.

Technical
Along with assisting with procedures, the clinical assistant provides technical assistance such as assisting providers with exams - handing swabs to doctor and putting them into the culture tubes, holding slides for smears, etc. urinalysis, fingersticks for CLIA lab testing, phlebotomy; medication reconciliation and injections, patient education prevention and chronic disease management; operating medical equipment such as ultrasound and X-ray machines used to diagnose conditions and perform routine checkups.
 
Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance within the scope of their practice by the governing board of the license or certification.

  • Provide OB GYN nurse services to female patients and newborns with illnesses.
  • Obtain medical history of patients and communicate to the physician
  • Acts as an advocate for our patients with OB/GYN concerns. Able to provide patient education as appropriate
  • Provide OB GYN nurse services to female patients and newborns with illnesses.
  • Strong assessment skills so as to assist provider with answering calls for last minute appointments, assessing for urgency of need and scheduling patients appropriately
  • Navigation of health care system with patients during process of new diagnosis of OB/GYN related conditions.
  • Coordination of services between primary care and specialty care services and referrals.
  • Coordination of scheduling for providers and specialized clinics, such as OB clinic, GYN procedures, Prenatal Groups, etc.
  • Coordination of physician administered medical devices, requiring educational component for patients, required documents for tracking, and device inventory.
  • Manages and helps to coordinate follow-up and tracking of abnormal pap smear and mammogram results.

General Clerical:
  • Under the general direction of the Practice Manager, Clinical Director and the provider the OB/GYN clinical assistant is responsible for the performance of clerical and administrative duties in the office, admission and collection of data on patients, assisting with appointment scheduling referral and treatment authorization processes.
  • Works with OB/GYN team to perform clerical and administrative functions such as preparation of correspondence, electronic filing, data entry, faxing, scanning and copying.
  • Assists with ordering and tracking of medical supplies.
  • Travel to other office locations to support physician(s) as required.
  • Requires a demonstrated ability to multitask between heavy phone volume, multiple computer systems and frequent interruptions.
  • Maintains an orderly, neat and clean work area, patient room and waiting room.
  • Must have a clear understanding of the confidentiality laws that govern the patient/physician relationship.
  • Follows through with the patient and their physician offices on outstanding documentation needed to finalize the patient’s medical record.
  • Maintains documentation in electronic health record to ensure complete medical record.
  • Assists in facilitating requests for patient medical records and management of all patient referrals.
  • Retrieves, routes, processes and files information as appropriate when obtained from fax machine/inbox, physician work baskets and regular mail according to established policy.
  • Provides patients with instructions and serves as liaison between the physician and patients.
  • Coordinates and guides patient visit from check-in to check-out.
  • Takes appropriate actions and responds to internal and external customer inquiries.
  • Manages the telephones. Receives all incoming calls from both internal and external lines.
  • Screen and route incoming calls efficiently ensuring accurate registration, appointment scheduling and follow-up appointment scheduling into database.
  • Documents messages and routes to appropriate clinical staff.
  • Coordinates transportation to care centers and residential homes as requested by patients or physicians.
  • Must have the ability to handle ongoing face-to-face contact with patients and staff while functioning in a busy medical office environment.
  • Receives and registers patients and all visitors in a prompt and courteous manner.
 
Scheduling:
  • Assist with schedules and re-schedules diagnostic tests, appointments, procedures, surgery, and other ancillary scheduling for patients; may provide patient with preparation instructions for exams, tests, or surgeries when required.
  • Ensure appointments are coordinated with other health care entities as appropriate.
  • May assist with confirming patient appointments for the following day.
  • Responds to patient’s questions and needs by editing, canceling and re-scheduling appointments as necessary according to company protocols.
  • Schedules, cancels and reschedules appointments when the clinical templates/schedules warrant.

Billing:
  • Coordinates obtaining authorizations for care. Pre-certify patient insurance for clinic and hospital procedures.
  • Responsible for entering in progress note all CPT code performed at each patient visit. Customer Service:
  • All pertinent patient information must be completed within 24 hours of the patient encounter.

Registration:
  • Receives patient in applicable systems, verifies patient demographics and identity using appropriate patient verification methods.
  • Ensures patient data is entered into computer under scheduling and progress notes areas with accurate and appropriate demographics.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse  (registration/certification/NC license is REQUIRED)
  • 2 to 5 years of OB/GYN Health care experience any setting is REQUIRED.
  • At least 1 years of clinical support experience in an outpatient physician’s office setting strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly recommended/preferred; applicants who may serve in a translating capacity will be required to take a language assessment
  • Excellent communication, telephone and organizational skills
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must have basic understanding of medical terms and abbreviations
  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently in a potentially stressful environment
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding when carrying out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective, professional relationships with patients, providers, coworkers, and superiors
  • Possess knowledge of modern office equipment, Microsoft Office software programs, medical practice management systems (scheduling, registration, and charge entry), and basic computer skills (including the ability to type)
  • Must be able to quickly learn to use eClinicalWorks electronic health record system
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
